CARE is Love In Action

CARE is Love In Action

People won’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
John C. Maxwell and others.

Growing up in the 60s I didn’t really know what was going on around me in this big world. I mean, what 10-12 year old keeps up with politics or the Vietnam war? I was clueless. I was interested in cartoons, sports, and having fun watching The Beverly Hillbillies, Gilligan’s Island, and The Addam’s Family.

Commercials and advertising used very strong images back in these days.  Remember The Marlboro Man? How about

  • Speedy from Alka Seltzer
  • Virginia Slims
  • Tang (even the astronauts would drink it in space)
  • Tony the Tiger
  • The White Tornado
  • Mr. Clean
  • Tareyton 100s : “I’d rather fight than switch.”
  • Choosy Mothers Choose Jiff
  • The Jolly Green Giant
  • Charlie Tuna

But, there was one commercial that I would see on TV that caught my attention. It was really a PSA – public service announcement to raise awareness for C.A.R.E.

The CARE Package was the original unit of aid distributed by the humanitarian organization CARE (Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere).

It actually started in 1945 to give aid to the people of Europe who were recovering from WWII.

Large numbers of people were at risk of starvation in the wake of World War II. The organization obtained permission from the United States government to send U.S. Army surplus “10-in-1” food parcels to Europe. The “10-in-1” parcels had been prepared for an invasion of Japan, which never transpired. Americans were given the opportunity to purchase a CARE Package for 10 dollars to send to friends or relatives in Europe. Packages were guaranteed to arrive within four months.  Wiki

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy acknowledged the impact of CARE Packages, saying, “Every CARE Package is a personal contribution to the world peace our nation seeks. It expresses America’s concern and friendship in a language all peoples understand.”

In the 1960s I remember seeing these commercials for C.A.R.E. and they would say

C.A.R.E. is Love in Action.

In 50 years it has not left my mind.

So, how can I apply this today?

CARE is Love In Action

The term CARE package now means a box or item that contains things like snacks, toys, crafts, and surprises for those in the military, college, or other situation. They can be for anyone.

Now, let us go beyond the idea of a box.

Here are 5 ways that you can show CARE this week. Remember, it is Love in Action.

  1. Write a Thank You note or a note to Encourage someone.
  2. Give an extra large “tip” to someone who does service for you, like your stylist, lawn mower guy, the Postman, or your waitress at your favorite eating place.
  3. Pay It Forward – while in a drive through line at Starbucks or Wendy’s pay for the order of the car behind you.
  4. Take a gift basket of “goodies” to an assisted living center or to a retiree that may need to be encouraged.
  5. Volunteer – donate your most precious commodity – your time – at the Food Bank, Homeless Shelter, Children’s Hospital, or Veteran’s Center.
