Casablanca – Humphrey Bogart At the Movies

casablanca

Casablanca [1942] is truly a classic movie that
everyone should see at least once.  And it
is this movie and a few others that has
caused me to really like Humphrey Bogart.

Bogart plays an American club owner
in Casablanca during WWII. There are
people trying to escape to America and
who are willing to pay whatever price
is needed.

Directed by Michael Curtiz, Casablanca
has a great number of wonderful screen
names that you will recognize.

Humphrey Bogart — Rick Blaine
Ingrid Bergman — Ilsa Lund
Paul Henreid — Victor Laszlo
Claude Rains — Captain Louis Renault
Conrad Veidt — Major Heinrich Strasser
Sydney Greenstreet — Signor Ferrari
Peter Lorre — Ugarte
Dooley Wilson – Sam

Casablanca – Humphrey Bogart At the Movies

There are so many classic movie lines delivered
in this one movie. How about:

Rick: Of all the gin joints, in all the towns,
in all the world, she walks into mine.

Rick: Louie, I think this is the beginning
of a beautiful friendship.

Ilsa: But what about us?
Rick: We’ll always have Paris. We didn’t have, we,
we lost it until you came to Casablanca.
We got it back last night. …
Rick: Here’s looking at you kid.

One of my favorite quotes from this movie,
and there are many, is from Claude Rains as
Captain Renault: Round up the usual suspects.

And let’s not forget about the music. One of the
most famous songs of all time is in this classic
black & white movie. It is called “As Time Goes By.”

As Time Goes By
(1931) (uncredited)
Written by Herman Hupfeld
Performed by Dooley Wilson (piano dubbed by Elliot Carpenter)
Variations played often in the score
(originally from the 1932 Broadway show “Everybody’s Welcome”)

I would encourage you to watch several of
Humphrey Bogart’s movies and see if you
agree with me that he is one of the great actors

  • The Maltese Falcon
  • The Big Sleep
  • Key Largo
  • The Caine Mutiny
