Do Not Disturb

Do Not Disturb

One of the best things about my I-phone is the ability I have to select Do Not Disturb.

I’m guilty of checking my messages on certain Apps all through the day, and I’ve even done it in the middle of the night. Looking at your phone right before you lay down to go to sleep should never be part of your pattern, but, alas, for many of us it is.

Years ago while I was in college we had to rely on writing letters and long distance phone calls placed at the pay phone.

Then there was a time most of us who were on the go had pagers. Pagers allowed us to receive a message to call in to our phone service and obtain our messages or voice-mail.

In this day and age we have phones that are really computers, cameras, calculators, file cabinets, and much, much more.  There is more technology in your average IOS or Android device than was on the Apollo spacecraft that landed on the moon.

But, sometimes we need to just shut off all the devices in our lives and allow our brains, our minds, and our bodies to unwind. And sometimes I just don’t want to be bothered by my friends, or families, and especially unwanted marketing emails and messages.

I learned this the hard way. As a worship pastor I had to arrive at the church early on Sunday morning, around 7:00 am. So, I liked to get to bed at least by 11:00 pm so I could get about 7 hours sleep or more. One night about 11:45 or so I received a message from one of my team members who, like me, is a night owl. I was in bed and trying to sleep when this vibration and sound went off on my phone. Well, I had to see what it said. It was really about nothing life threatening so I went back to bed and finally fell asleep.

Here is what I learned to avoid this in the future.

On and I-phone just go to Settings and look for Do Not Disturb.

Select Do Not Disturb. You have several choices. Here is what I have [see pic].

I have selected MANUAL and it seems to do the job. If I get a phone call or message the phone does not vibrate or make sounds.

You’ll notice I Allow Calls From my Favorites, which are family members or friends that I allow access 24/7. You can learn how to select Favorites by going to Wiki How.

I also allow Repeated Calls that may be important, especially from a family member.

Do Not Disturb

Now, when you want to unwind, relax, and go off-line you have another way to do that. The old saying “Silence is Golden” is still true especially when you are surrounded by electronic devices that deliver entertainment and information every second of the day.
