My Life Verse

My Life Verse

I was raised by two Bible believing, God
fearing parents that had me going to
church even before I was born!

The only time you were able to miss
church was if you were really sick. So,
I was at church a lot. I mean:

  • 2 services on Sunday
  • Sunday School
  • Training Union
  • Wednesday night Bible study
  • 2 week long revivals [during the 50s-60s]
  • Special study courses [during the winter]

So, I’ve heard a lot of Bible teaching, preaching,
studying, interpretation and more.

But I never considered having a Life Verse. It
never occurred to me.

My Life Verse

One night while in my thirties
I had a dream. A very vivid dream.

It was so real that I woke up and
had these words in my mind:

I will sing of the mercies of the Lord

Well, I knew that sounded like scripture,
but I wasn’t sure where it was located. So,
in the middle of the night, or morning as
it was, I went to the kitchen with my
Thompson Chain Reference Bible and
started looking for this possible verse.

My Life Verse

I actually started in Psalm 1 and went forward.
So, it took a little bit of time. But I found it
in Psalm 89.1.

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD
for ever: with my mouth will I make
known thy faithfulness to all generations.

Having been a musician for most of my life I
realized the implications of this verse. I was a
vocal major in college. I sang in high school in
a folk group called H.I.S.

I sang in college in
2 college choirs plus an oratorio group. I sang
in college in a Christian rock band called
Theophilus. And when I had this dream I was
a singer/musician in the band at our church
called Last Days Light Band.

This scripture meant something to me. That my
message would be to tell people how good God
is and do that through singing. Plus, it says to
all generations.

Since college I have worked in day cares,
Christian schools, sang in church, and the
last few years have been the leader of the
senior adult ministry at our church – the 50+.

I have always been able to share the songs
of old, like Amazing Grace and others, and
also play and sing the modern songs. I have
a wide range of knowledge [I’ve been doing
this a long time.]

So, not everyone has to have a Life Verse, but
if you have one I encourage you to share it
with me in the Comments section below.

  1. My life verse! Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
