Near to The Heart of God

Near to The Heart of God

In my first week of retirement I’ve been asked to lead worship at a church in Skiatook, OK. In my planning of what songs I wanted to present I thought of this old hymn.

Knowing that my friend, Doug, likes to take older rock songs and change the lyrics, I also like to arrange older hymns to make them more modern.

So, I picked a 50s Doo Wop style and changed the chords, leaving the melody the same.

When we sing it on Sunday it will be a familiar song to some of the older people who knew and have sung this old hymn. To the younger ones who have not been exposed to many hymns, it will sound like a cool new song.

If you would like a copy of the chord chart please message me by leaving a comment with your email address.

Near to The Heart of God

Near to the Heart of God
Cleland B. McAfee, 1903

  1. There is a place of quiet rest,
    Near to the heart of God;
    A place where sin cannot molest,
    Near to the heart of God.

    • Refrain:
      O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
      Sent from the heart of God;
      Hold us, who wait before Thee,
      Near to the heart of God.
  2. There is a place of comfort sweet,
    Near to the heart of God;
    A place where we our Savior meet,
    Near to the heart of God.
  3. There is a place of full release,
    Near to the heart of God;
    A place where all is joy and peace,
    Near to the heart of God.

Near to The Heart of God

The message of the lyrics is what is important. In this world we will have turmoil. But there is a place, like the song says, where we can find comfort, peace, safety – Near to the Heart of God.
