Perfectly Placed Planet

 Perfectly Placed Planet

Awesome God by Rich Mullins

Our God is an awesome God. He perfectly placed the earth far enough away from our sun so that we could enjoy light and warmth, and not so close to the sun that we would burn up and die, and not so far from the sun that we would always be cold and freeze. He put the earth in the perfect spot. The earth, the blue planet, is the perfectly placed planet.

The whole of faith and belief is this: IF He could do this and create the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom and the human kingdom, and they could all live and thrive on this perfectly placed planet, then He can do what you need in your life to give you balance, purpose and meaning.

This perfectly placed planet orbits the sun, our star. Here are some facts from Wikipedia:

  • The Sun is the star at the center of the Solar System and is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth.
  • Mass: 1.989E30 kg
  • Surface temperature: 5,778 K
  • Radius: 695,800 km (1 R☉)
  • Distance to Earth: 92,960,000 miles (149,600,000 km)

Perfectly Placed Planet

So, if we lived on any other planet we could not even survive more than a few moments or even seconds. Why?

Every other planet and orb in our solar system is either too close to the sun [the high temperature would kill you] or it is too far away [the cold temperature would freeze you]. Also, there is lack of the proper elements required for living things of the earth to survive, such as:

  • lack of oxygen
  • imbalance of hydrogen and carbon dioxide
  • lack of sufficient gravity
  • the atmosphere or lack of it does not meet the needs of a human body

Perfectly Placed Planet

So, why this interest in the perfectly placed planet on a hot July day? That’s the point. If our planet varied from it’s orbit around the sun just a few miles either closer or further away it would spell disaster for all living things. We could not survive. The blue planet that is currently perfect for it’s inhabitants would turn into a vast wasteland of scorched fields or frozen oceans. We would look very similar to all the other planets that have been studied.

To the Christian, whether we comprehend science or not, the hope of a faithful God being able to place planets in their orbits is also hope of the same God being able to direct our steps and provide for our needs along the way.

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 45:18 – For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I [am] the LORD; and [there is] none else.

Psalms 74:16 | The day is thine, the night also is thine: thou hast prepared the light and the sun.

Ecclesiastes 11:7 |Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:

Proverbs 3: 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

Psalm 139 :7Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. 9If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. 12Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. 13For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. 14I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
