Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Swing Low Sweet Chariot

I have never picked cotton or processed it.  I’ve never baled hay.

But, I have sung or whistled while I worked to pass the time.

Today’s song is a Negro Spiritual (as they used to be called) — Swing Low Sweet Chariot. You can also say it is an African American song probably written and sung by slaves as they labaored in the fields.

The song has images of “looking over Jordan” and “a band of angels.” It definitely puts in mind the future of heaven and those who have already departed from this life.

There is the hope of the resurrection and being reunited with loved ones like your father or mother.

Please enjoy my interpretation of this significant and historical song.

Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Swing low, Sweet Chariot
Comin’ for to carry me home

Swing low, Sweet Chariot
Comin’ for to carry me home

I looked over Jordan and what did I see?
Comin’ for to carry me home
There was a band full of angels comin’ after me
Comin’ for to carry me home

Swing Low Sweet Chariot

Well, if you get there before I do
Comin’ for to carry me home
Just tell my Daddy I’m comin’ too
Comin’ for to carry me home
