The Magnificent Seven a Review

The Magnificent Seven a Review

The Magnificent Seven (2016) was a pleasant surprise. I had no idea what to expect. I might have seen the original (1960), but I’m not sure. It seems like I played the theme music in high school band. But, back to the movie, I really enjoyed this version of the famous Western.

The original that starred Yul Brynner,  Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and was directed by John Sturges was set in a small Mexican village. The 1960 film is an Old West-style remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai.

The more recent version features a motley crew of hired gun fighters who come together to help a small western town who has suffered under the cruel hand of the mine owner played by Peter Sarsgaard.

Director Antoine Fuqua worked with some great actors, including:

Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier. The lead female role was by Haley Bennett.

I really enjoyed the performances of Denzel, Chris, and Vincent. Hey, the others were good, too, or they would not have been cast in the movie. But, Denzel portrays Chisholm, a tough bounty hunter who decides to come to the aid of the widow (Bennett) who lost her husband and is in fear of losing her whole town.

What we lost in the fire, we found in the ashes.

This movie is a lot of fun, a lot of action, and a lot of killing. Oh, did I say there was a Gatling Gun involved?

If you have a chance please go see this movie on the large screen.

  1. I wondered if this would be good! The original is one of my favorites. Yul Brynner was so good in the original. Also all of the actors were great. I will try to catch this one. Glad you let us know that it as good. Did you ever see Yul Brynner in Westworld. I think that was the name. He played a robot. He was terrific! He was in all of his roles–and they were so diverse.
