Will Jesus Find Us Watching

Back in Ingleside High School several of us guys formed a singing group called H.I.S. In the last configuration of the group we had Robert Perry on lead vocal, Mark Burleigh on bass vocal, Bruce Freudenrich on vocals, guitar, and bass, and Chuck Whetstone on vocals, guitar and piano.

We had a lot of fun singing in churches and and for various events in the Corpus Christi area. We never made any real recordings. There is a bad cassette recording of a live concert we did that was held at First Baptist Church in Ingleside, Texas. But, it’s been 46 years and the quality is really noisy.

Bruce and I would get together and try to come up with new songs, or new arrangements of older songs. This old hymn by Fanny Crosby was in the Baptist Hymnal. We liked the words. The original music is good, too, but we liked our own version better.

This is a rough mix of me trying to reproduce part of the sound Bruce and I had back in the day. It’s close, but the simplicity of the two guitars we had back then really sounded so much better live.

I’m recording a new album called Texas Roots. This song will be featured on that album. I may decide to add bass, drums, and keyboard. But for now you can enjoy this basic mix.

Will Jesus Find Us Watching

Lyrics: Frances J. Crosby
Music: William H. Doane [original tune]
Chuck Whetstone/Bruce Freudenrich [new music]

When Jesus comes to reward His servants,
Whether it be noon or night,
Faithful to Him will He find us watching,
With our lamps all trimmed and bright?

Oh, can we say we are ready, brother?
Ready for the soul’s bright home?
Say, will He find you and me still watching,
Waiting, waiting when the Lord shall come?

If, at the dawn of the early morning,
He shall call us one by one,
When to the Lord we restore our talents,
Will He answer thee, “Well done”?

[verse 3 is not on the recording]
Have we been true to the trust He left us?
Do we seek to do our best?
If in our hearts there is naught condemns us,
We shall have a glorious rest.

Blessed are those whom the Lord finds watching,
In His glory they shall share;
If He shall come at the dawn or midnight,
Will He find us watching there?
